I try to get away a few times a year, generally only around Europe and even then I typically only bring a carry-on (Ryanair flights!). Recently however I was on a trip to Beijing so I needed to increase my luggage space.

When I was looking around online I knew nothing about what case to buy, only what size I wanted. I came across the Samsonite website and knowing that they were a reputable brand I settled on the Samsonite Aeris Comfort spinner. It is a hard cover (won't get squashed), four wheeled suitcase with an extendable handle. Samsonite claim that the hard cover is resistant to scratches but after one leg of my trip the cover had a scratch down one side. I don't know if I can blame Samsonite or the baggage handlers at Schipol for this though. The cover does feel quite tough though and doesn't feel like it will buckle easily. The extandable handle is of a high quality and stays firm in your hand, compared with cheap knock offs that wobble and break easily. The locking mechanism is standard samsonite and should protect your baggage from thieves, for a short while at least. Moving on the four wheels is effortless and makes toiling through large airports and around a big city a little more bearable. The only downside here however is the weight. Samsonite say that it weighs 5.3kg empty but after lugging it around it feels like 20! Just be wary if you have a low baggage weight limit on your flight.

Inside the case looks quite pretty with a cream and blue patterned insert. This is a nice touch and breaks up the business like formality of the case. The insert feels glossy to the touch and perhaps may rip, though this has yet to happen to me. An interesting feature of the samsonite is the luggage straps that exist inside to restrain your contents. Unlike normal cases which have them tethered at a fixed point, the samsonite variety can move in place in order to match the height of your luggage. They slide along fixed poles at the side of the case, which are pretty stiff so they won't move accidentaly.

Overall I'm quite happy I bought this case, it was a bit expensive at £205 but it is a quality investment that will do me for a long time. And also, Samsonite threw in a free inflatable crocodile (or is it alligator?) with the purchase. Don't ask me why!
